Flood Watch for parts of the Western Cape York Peninsula

Issued at 12:09 pm EST on Sunday 16 February 2025

Flood Watch Number: 23

FURTHER FLOODING IS POSSIBLE IN PARTS OF THE WESTERN CAPE YORK PENINSULA CATCHMENTS OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS

MINOR TO MAJOR FLOODING CONTINUES ACROSS MULTIPLE CATCHMENTS IN THE NORTH TROPICAL COAST, CENTRAL COAST, GULF COUNTRY, AND LAKE EYRE BASIN

A chance of showers and thunderstorms will continue over northern Queensland for several days. Isolated moderate rainfall is possible for the Flood Watch area.

Catchments across the Flood Watch area are very wet from recent rainfall and will respond quickly to further rainfall.

River level rises and areas of flooding are occurring across the Flood Watch area, with renewed major flooding occurring along the Magnificent Creek at Kowanyama. Further river level rises are possible over the next few days with the arrival of upstream floodwaters. Elevated tides are also occurring which may enhance flooding in coastal parts of the Flood Watch area.

Isolation of communities and disruption to transport routes is occurring and expected to continue over the next few days.

Catchments likely to be affected include:

Coleman and Edward Rivers
Mitchell River
(Including Magnificent Creek)
Staaten River

Flood warnings are current for the following catchments: Norman and Gilbert Rivers, Herbert River, Diamantina River, Flinders River, Burdekin River, Thomson and Barcoo Rivers, and Cooper Creek.
